Staff Digest September 2004

Category
CyberArmy
Summary
The month has been fairly slow compared to the normal operating pace of CyberArmy on a whole. This can mostly be attributed to people's newer autumn schedules during the transition from summer vacation to starting school.
Body
The role of staff continues to be to serve the CyberArmy population and it is hoped that this Digest will help members be more in touch with what Staff is doing and be able to point us in the direction you want to go. Remember to use the Feedback form!

CyberArmy Related

- CyberArmy Store
The CyberArmy store has been updated to reflect the Cafepress products as well as remove some older products no longer available. If you haven't already check out http://store.cyberarmy.net

- CSA's old RSS feed
The old CSA security related RSS feed has been removed from MyOffice due to the merger between Special Operations and CSA. It is hoped a new security feed might be started by either Special Operations and Security or by CPC.

- Why CyberArmy?
This would be a new page on the Wiki that would compare CyberArmy to other organizations and describe the benefits of this community. So far no one has volunteered for writing it, but hopefully it will get done and generate some more public interest.

- Files repository
Administrator rights for the various file groups has been updated.

- C/Os update administrators group
This group provides a forum for the webmasters and administrators of the various brigade websites so that certain events could be coordinated between the sites if need be.

- Staff badge
The issue of a staff badge came up again to help members recognize staff members more easily. Although a member's participation in staff is publicly viewable at
http://www.cyberarmy.net/~username some people are still confused to who is actually on staff. Because there are already two badges - rank and challenge - it was decided that adding a new badge would probably not work but the possibility of modifying the current rank badges for staff members is still up for discussion.

CyberArmy Member Related

- CyberArmy resum?
In order to lend some tractability to a member in regard to their participation in various brigades it was thought that perhaps a resum? could be created that would track users entering and leaving brigades and state reasons why they decided to move within the CyberArmy community. This would be especially useful for C/Os when deciding about accepting a new member into their brigade.

- "Ideals" discussions topics
A few CyberArmy staff members have started to periodically post topics on the CyberArmy Ideals forum to get a better understanding of the CyberArmy community as a whole. Please feel free to join these conversations and have your voice be heard.

- CyberArmy code of conduct
So far the Current Events forum will remain one of the most open boards to all types of discussion free from moderator influence unless a member starts using personal attacks and becomes insulting to other members.

- Rank mottos
This proposal was that each rank would create a motto for itself as a kind of solidifying experience. As witty as CyberArmy Staff is, not too many mottos could be created and it is assumed this issue is still up in the air.

- Staff: Where are you?
We are coming off a long and fairly unproductive summer and it seems everyone is still getting adjusted to their new autumn schedules because almost all staff members replied that they were having trouble finding time to devote to CyberArmy. A schedule was setup on the staff Wiki to try and work out times that could be devoted to CyberArmy duties. Hopefully this thread brought people's attentions back to how much they can conceivably contribute to CyberArmy.

-Proposal to increase transparency and member influence
A proposal was brought up that would implement various features to help CyberArmy members feel more connect to CyberArmy staff. These features would include a poll function in both MyOffice and on the forums and an available list of discussions on staff forums. It is the goal of CyberArmy staff to serve the members and we are always looking for ways to do this job more efficiently. So far these features are still being discussed and their value to the membership as a whole is still being questioned.

- Proposal for point-based ranks and promotions
This thread generated a lot of discussion. It was started when fu and Sorcer submitted a draft proposal to make promotions more automated by implementing a point based system. The draft allowed for current ranks to be kept and simply assign that number of points to each member. Further points would be earned on a per project basis based on time to complete, quality of work, attitude, participation, self initiative, and management. These points would not only have an effect on rank but would allow for forum moderation by voting up or down posts and having votes weighted by number of points. Currently it seems like this system is still some time off, but it has brought up some good issues and continues to be talked about.

Various Comings and Goings

- Gen SHEPHERD stops in
General SHEPHERD stopped in to say hello from Kuwait to let us know he was going to be relaxing in Idaho for a little bit on leave before finishing up his last 3-4 months on tour.

- Ker Prothis is back
Prothis got back at the beginning of the month from a little vacation. Good to have you back.

- Mar Condor191 still in and out
Condor191 was away for personal business, but does not think it will be much longer before he can come back to active duty.

- Mar Tacheon is getting his life back
Tacheon will no longer have to suffer through 14 hour shifts 6 days a week and can finally start getting his life back on track. Hopefully he'll be back in the CyberArmy in no time.

- Gen sieco
Sieco makes a surprise appearance back on staff after he has completed a good deal of his law enforcement training. If you're in the UK, don't get stopped by this officer!
