| | Body | V: So, many people have asked me, What does your nick mean?
D: lol
D: Well...this is funny.
D: You are going to love this!
D: When I was growing up... my dad had a CB radio,
D: and when I smile I have dimples in my cheeks :o) so my CB handle was dimples.
D: I do not have dimples in my rear end like so many would like to think. :P
D: But my dad was a big CB radio freak.... so he gave me this handle hehe.
V: Wow, that's incredible...
V: Now, o?n to something a little more serious... what do you think CA will be in the future?
D: I think CA is moving into a positive direction. We are slowly shedding our "Hacker" image and are attracting a more mature and "out of the box" thinkers.
D: We still have a lot to overcome... example our brigade structure.
D: But I am seeing that we are working o?n that and moving forward we will better define our brigades and the work they do.
D: This helping establish us is a more productive light.
V: Do you think, by "shedding our 'hacker' image" we will lose a large percentage of visitors to our sites?
D: I think o?nce Sered is up and running... the visitors that enjoyed Zebulun will be playing those challenges. This is why it was so important to make the move of separating our rank structure from Zebulun. We found out a lot of the Zeb players really o?nly liked the challenges and did not care too much about what the brigades did.
D: So having Sered and our brigades separate, gives our visitors more of a choice.... If you like the brigades, you can work in the brigades, if you like o?nly the challenges, you o?nly have to do the challenges
D: Here is a funny note though.
D: When pengo designed this site... it was o?nly for the challenges. The o?nly reason our mission statement was developed is because his hosting provider was going to disconnect him because of that "hacker" atmosphere that Zebulun had.
D: So he put up that mission statement and it really took a mind of its own.
V: Heh, that's interesting, funny, and something most people probably don't know.
V: This is probably a no, but do you have any timescale for Sered? I know we have heard soon for a long time, and there is talk of 12 - 24 months... Can you give us some info o?n this (more than in Goldfish's post)?
D: I wish I could, but I am not active in the ChalDev area.... Because I am Brigade Coordinator, I work more o?n the brigade side. So I know about as much as you guys know o?n the time frame.
V: Ok, now o?n a totally different side of things, how did you get into computing, and what do you tell people who are just starting out with computers?
D: You do have some good questions. :P
V: thanks :P
D: I got into computers by modeling... I know that sounds lame but I had helped a friend with a site he had and donated a few pics that we made. Then the pics that I had made started showing up o?n various other sites, which I did not want them to lol. So I started hanging out in IRC chat channels.. The o?nes your mom tells you not to go to.
D: I started learning how to do some things that I probally should not talk about here :o) but I did get my pics removed from the sites that did not need them.
D: I also learned a lot about IRC and from there it just evolved.
D: So basically, sitting o?n IRC and asking questions I started getting deeper into computers.
D: Telling people that just started.
D: I tell them to join certain channels o?n some developed networks where there is activity and they can learn. I also tell them to read any books they can get their hands on.
D: If they have the option to take classes then do so.
V: Ok, o?n a totally different note, <A href="http://www.cyberarmy.com/finger/dimplesx]www.cyberarmy.com/finger/dimplesx has 1 graphic which can be found here: <A href="http://www.bewm.org/Medalshelf.jpg]Medalshelf.jpg <-- What exactly do the two trophies mean/represent/how did you get them?
D: lol
D: I was having some slow time in CA... all the brigades were working and nobody was fighting! So I got bored. I had recently started playing with PSP7, so I thought it would be fun to put up some forum challenges and let the members play.
D: So I made a challenge of hiding a medal within our forums. The challenge was to find this medal. The first person that found the medal would win. Jehnx found the first medal!
D: So staff had talked about giving medals out to members at o?ne time, but o?ne of the concerns was people putting them in their signatures.
D: So I made that AWESOME lol medalshelf so people could display their medals! God I am so lame sometimes I have to ignore myself.
D: I also own <A href="http://www.bewm.org]www.bewm.org so that is why you see it o?n there.
V: Are there new medals which people can win, or has that been dis-continued?
D: The last challenge I had up was to crack a code. Nobody cracked it. As far as I am concerned it is still running. The post is in the Cyberarmy Lounge Forum. Every o?nce in awhile I will throw up a new challenge and offer a medal. Just got busy at work and in CA, but I have medals waiting to be won. :o)
V: Ok, sounds great!!!
V: Now just to finish off... is there anything you would like to say?
D: Well
D: I think we have some great members. A lot has changed since I have started and we have lost some good members, but the o?nes I see coming up in the ranks gives me hope. I just want to thank EVERBODY for all the hard work and stuff they put up with in this organization. It can get rough sometimes. But you always see the true CA members stick it out.
D: It is like a blackhole.
D: O?nce you are sucked in, you can't leave.
D: Some have left, but they still come back just to see what we are doing.
D: Some have left and tried to develop something like CyberArmy, but they just are missing that o?ne special thing
D: It is not CyberArmy
D: There is nothing like this o?n the internet.
V: Very true words there from Dimplesx... I would like to thank you again for allowing us to take up your time. |
