CyberArmy Board Digest

Category
CyberArmy
Summary
Here is another edition of elm's Board Digest. It is a compilation of the most important, interesting, and humorous posts. Read on to learn more about the CyberArmy community.
Body
Several things have changed since the last board digest was published. Alley decided to leave us. Thanks to SHEPHERD, DigitalDemon, Highwaystar, and Blackflag for getting the moderation guidelines up. I also contributed a little.

On a more positive note, a new forum was added, and seems to be a hit amongst most of the in crowd. At this point I would like to thank the staff for making my life harder, and request that scan punch me in the ribs. I will of course be including the lounge in board digest, as it is a board.

There have been several posts lately on different boards about staff being a problem. I'm not going to comment on anything specific, but I will say this: Most of CA doesn't seem to have a problem with staff; it seems to be a few people who disapprove of any sort of control but their own. I object to people attacking staff. The people on staff are members of CA also, and deserve to be treated with the same respect as you and I. I'm all for hearing out what people have to say when they make suggestions or back up their arguments with some sort of intelligent thought. To the best of my knowledge this is the official staff of Cyberarmy. http://www.cyberarmy.com/staff.html is a complete list of staff. This is not some group of super secret ninja monkeys. If you have a problem with someone in specific, why don't you address them, as opposed to talking about some vague group of people known only as ?staff??

While I'm still on the subject, I would like to point out that by joining Cyberarmy you entered into a social contract, and by staying within CyberArmy you are still bound by that concept. If you are not familiar with the idea of social contracts, I suggest that you read some of John Locke's writing on the subject. Once again in this edition of board digest we will be hearing from some different people within Cyberarmy. This time we will be listening to the musings of condor191 and icklenewt, for their feelings on board moderation, and the boards. I would like to thank both of them for responding to my cMS. Here is condor191's response:

Well in some cases, I have seen some posts that were just done in fun,

that were taken more seriously than they should have been, and in many cases the posts were deleted. There have also been some times that I have seen moderators threatening to delete posts on IRC and basically pissing people off.

That's all I really have, as I don't spend a lot of time on the forums.

And one from Icklenewt:

Ok Here's my proper reply ;)

I think board moderation needs to make sure it clears out illegal stuff to make sure CA isn't accountable for anything. Also, its got to cover the things that CA stands for. I think it would be helpful if duplicated posts could be cleared - I mean when someone posts the same thing on multiple boards, because that's not what they are designed for, and there shouldn't be any need for it. After that, then its mainly keeping the place sorted using common sense. Like posts that are rude/insensitive/uncalled for, in a non-joking manner, should be wiped -especially if they are directly referring to a member, because such posts can be quite offensive and make members feel like they don't want to return here because everyone has read that post about them, etc.

I think it needs to be made clear that debating issues is encouraged, providing a sensible, non-threatening, attitude is used. etc. Also when a post is deleted, maybe a cMS should be sent to the person who posted it, with a quick explanation and/or warning about it, just so there aren't follow up posts questioning it. Also I think if you cMS the offender, then you can inform them that if it continues then some kind of ban will be enforced -therefore they are warned and if subsequent messages are posted within a short time, then they get banned, but I don't actually know what your current methods are when you deal with posts.

Brigade Coordination Forum

Inspectorgadget made a post about the IRC debate ?What Cyberarmy means to you.? http://www.cyberarmy.com/forum/bcoord/messages/34905.html

Kermit is asking for suggestions on what to write into a Cyberarmy IRC

client. http://www.cyberarmy.com/forum/bcoord/messages/32641.html

Xeno and several other members of Cyberarmy asked and answered the question "What does your rank mean to you?" For me my rank means that once I really wanted to join propaganda (before it became CAPR, or even CA-SAS), and so I put a lot of effort into getting in to it (which required a higher rank).

Brigade Recruitment Forum

What always happens here happened again. People said things like, ?I need a job?, or ?I'm looking for people who want jobs?. Someday maybe this forum will bear up interesting fruit for me to write about, but I have already lost faith.

Member's General Discussion Forum

OmniOmi made a post about having a meeting for feedback.

http://www.cyberarmy.com/forum/members01/messages/34827.html

Makat made a post asking about people's opinions on offensive nicks on

IRC. This drew an awful lot of response.

http://www.cyberarmy.com/forum/members01/messages/34559.html

Hellz made comments about how staff fits into things, and how interaction with problems could be made to run more smoothly in the future. http://www.cyberarmy.com/forum/members01/messages/32484.html

Cyberarmy Public Forum

Goldfish made a post about Exploit Research's top fifty list. Excellent

Work, ER; and if you haven't seen it, go read the post. http://www.cyberarmy.com/forum/public/messages/33673.html

OmniOmi made a post about the CA mascot contest.

http://www.cyberarmy.com/forum/public/messages/32836.html

Goliath made a post about blockhouse and free web space for CA members.

Excellent job, Goliath. http://www.cyberarmy.com/forum/public/messages/30162.html

Gothic Freak made a post that everyone should go and support if they haven't yet. As a good friend of mine once said, ?open source or die.?

Cyberarmy Help And Support

Basically, this forum has been the same dry well that Recruitment has. No fun questions, no fun answers, but functional in the way that it should be. People ask, people answer, no one complains.

Cyberarmy Lounge

I don't know what to say. I knew you were all a bunch of spammers at heart but this has been an eye opener. I hear rumor that even the CinC got into the act, but his cohort shall remain nameless.

I must say that every Lounge has a lizard, and Xeno, you win. No question.

That being the case I thought I would do everyone a favor, and decode

Xenographic's riddle from the board. Obviously, It wasn't properly written back into English, so I read one of Xeno's previous posts, and understood the hint. This is how I decoded his message.

I went to the trusty www.babblefish.com and first translated his ?riddle? into French. I then translated it back into English. I then translated it into Italian. Then back into English. I then translated it into German. Finally I translated it back into English. I think at this point it becomes plainly clear what he was trying to say, but I can't comment on it further. Here are the results, you decide:

Is that it often not, but becomes it not ever belonged; can it nevertheless, without a word known become to aforementioned?

myself included.? Gen. Hellz
