Spamming... also a sin?

Category
Networking
Summary
It happened to Monks at the St Trinity and St Nicholas monastery in Shmakovka, Russia. Their website was shut down for spamming. Read along and you'll see that it's not a joke.
Body
"They are Christian Ortodoxian monks and they were spamming". This could be a good title for a Tom Clancy's bestseller.

Sending emails to thousands of inboxes was their crime. In their emails, the monks were asking for donations.

They stated that they were just amateurs and didn't know anyting about Internet regulations about spamming.

Their website? www.monast.ru . If you aren't keen in Russian, try to use the translation tool of Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/), for example.

The fact is that now the website is running as usual, but days before there was a "Closed for spam" message in ther index.html.

The problem was beacause the monks contracted the services of a company which sent information about the monastery by email.

Actually, the hosting company Farpost realized what was happening and returned the website to its original state. Now, you can see an apology in english on it such as: "Dear brothers and sisters! A company called I.M. offered our monastery to send information about us to a large number of people whose electronic addresses are taken from official sources. We took advantage of this service, not being aware of the fact that this turned out to be "spam", and that the dispatch of messages about he monastery can cause negative reaction in some people. We deeply apologise to everyone to whom our letter has brought inconvenience. The deputy of a monastery Hegumen Feofan (Ziborov)".

At the end, I would like to remember all of you one of the most famous evangelic phrases: "The ways of God are infinite...", so was spamming? well, just joking. Let's be serious, I think this is a good example of how people find Internet so useful and start to see it as another way of communicate such as telephone or regular mail.
