Background screens for windows(98 and later) can only be image files, true or false.
False you can also use .htm or html files. In normal talk that means you can set your background to a web site that you have downloaded or made.
Which type of image file takes up the largest amount of disk space, bitmap(.bmp), jpegs(.jpg) or tagged image files(.tif).
That would be bitmaps. Always try to use .jpg files online especially when sending large image files. Nothing annoys someone more than waiting for 2 hours to download an email just to get a huge image. You can save an image as a .jpg by finding the change the file type menu in the save as dialogue box(the thing that comes up when you select save as). One detail, when you save an img file as a .jpg file, your quality will be pretty poor, so back-up before making such changes !
When getting really worried about virii what file out of this list should you avoid?
sys.exe, readme.txt, g1.jpg or REM.mp3
.exe .vbs and .com(rarely used and don't start panicing about .com websites) are called executable files and these are the type of files that can give you a virus. Microsoft office documents can give you a macro virus(a macro is a number of commands that are repeated at certain times, used to make work easier). This isn't really all of it, but it's the basic thingt you should know.
Continuing the virus theme are virus protection software able to detect all virii?
I wish. No matter what they claim no software will detect every virus there are just too many of them and as everyone found out from code red they are playing catch up with the new ones. Your best defense is to be careful, don't accept .exe files from anyone without checking with them first and any email you get with a vague sounding title(eg "the file you asked for) double check.
Once a file is deleted and removed from the recycle bin there is no way to retrieve it, true or false?
A bit of an explenation here. The recylce bin is really a folder on your hard drive. What happens when you delete a file to the recycle bin is that windows just moves it there-it's not really deleted. Windows only deletes the file when you empty the bin. As ever what windows can't do DOS can. Using DOS you can retrieve these files. The only problem here is that if your computer has over written the areas of your hard drive that held this data it's gone forever(for those of you feeling really down there are placed telling how to deleted information somewhere online).
Are you able to erase a CD like a floppy disk using a magnet?
Hehe, nope. Disks and CDs store information in different ways. Disks encode their information using magnets, CDs use laser to form pits in the material that makes the CD. This series of cliffs and valleys are how the information is stored. The reason you can sometimes still use a CD that is scratched is that the information layer is coverd by a transparent protective layer. The reason that a scratch CD skips is that these scratches can deflect the laser beam readin the CD so that the player gets false readings and resets. Cure this by using a CD polish to restore the protective layer and bingo you can now listen to REM CD that looked like the surface of Europa again.
DVDs hold more information than CDs, true or false.
Yep true just like the floppy disk and CD, the DVD uses a newer type of data storage to hold information. If you want to be really inpressed, companies are working on DVDs with mulitple layers that should be able to hold over 100Gb !!
If you delete something to the recycle bin does it free up disk space?
No it doesn't and you should know why already from Q5 !
What does the term "Read-Only" mean in terms of a file?
It means you can't change the file. Important system files are often read only and its often better not to go messing round with them. If you have to change a read only file to a normal one just right click on it in Windows Explorer and select properties. Then untick the read only box at the bottom but for the love of God make a back up before you mess with anything important. NEVER TOUCH AUTOEXEC.BAT OR CONFIG.SYS IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHY THEY ARE USED.
If you forget your windows password is it possible to get into windows again without having to re-install it?
Yep just stick in a boot disk or start up in DOS, once there there is a file type that holds all of windows passwords it ends with the extension ".pwl". Just delete that and no more passwords. It's also possible to get around those annoying BIOS passwords(remove the CMOS battery for a up to a few minutes-depending on CMOS and battery).
What does USB stand for and what good is it?
Universal Serial Bus and it's very helpful. This wonderful little plug(s) at the back of your PC will finally make the dream of plug and play real. For those of you who haven't got a clue what I'm talking about look at the back of your computer. See all of those cables? How many of them look the same? With USB you dont have to worry about free ports just daisy chain them(one connected to another). It also means you never need to know what a serial port is or worry what it looks like. All of this is in theory but I already have 2 of my 3 scanners using USB and they were a hell of a lot easier to set us this way :-)
Thx to duke sam for helping me on this file. :)
