What's the best app for webdesign?

Summary
So you want to make yourself a killer website, you have no content yet? No talent? Well I can't help you then, but otherwise I'd like to recommend a few good apps for graphic design and who they're best suited for. :)

Ok Adobe Photoshop comes to most people's minds when they think of graphic design, but before you get all excited you have to think: "Am I willing to learn how to use this beast?" Well for most wannabe webmasters the true answer is no. Photoshop is extremely versatile and powerful. You can do almost anything with it, but you have to pay a price, the step learning curve. Photoshop looks boring when it is being used, it doesn't have no fancy buttons with little effects you'd like to apply to your selections - yes it does have filters, but to use them effectively you really need to get to know them well. Basically I see the road from MS Paint to Photoshop as a little steep? well about '90 degrees to the horizontal' steep. I must add Photoshop is good for making a nice Christmas card, unlike Fireworks below it has not been created for the purpose of creating web graphics.

Macromedia Fireworks? hmm well this one I can be biased about since I use it very often. I find it perfect for web based graphics and Macromedia somehow managed to have a balance between power and features. For beginners it comes with a range of effects you can apply to you graphics. It seems Photoshop has followed Fireworks' path of supporting vector graphics? a very good choice I must say since I find editing graphics on the fly invaluable. What I mean by that is you can create a piece of text, give it a shiny bevel bold effect and than give it a drop shadow plus a texture and you'd be still able to edit the text, even its font. Personally this is my favourite as it has the best of both worlds - vector and bitmap? though at places it has some quirks? if only it handled layers like Photoshop I'd be in heaven!

The newest app I have tried is a vector based one. It is simply my favourite for illustrations. Xara X is simply amazing in its features and ease of use. I used to use the much more powerful Corel DRAW for my graphics but I found it was too cumbersome in its weird and buggy interface. Just load some of the sample images created in this beauty and be astounded with awe and inspiration. Than rip the art apart and piece back how it was created! Hours of fun? well for me anyway! :)

I can't really give it a verdict on creating websites, since I haven't used it for that purpose yet? but it is looking real good with some nice tools made just for that? web button replication and easy editing anyone?!

Merry Christmas from me, and I hope you'll have all the best creating that killer website!
