Board Digest - April 2005

Category
CyberArmy
Summary
Ed: Welcome to the Board Digest for April 2005, some extremely notable discussions have taken place this month! and tons of site development and special feature additions. Read on to find out all about it...
Body
Goliath?s WAP Web
This month, Ikioi offered up his ?Goliath?s WAP Web? for CA members to utilize. While not WML, it?s not specifically formatted for phones, but it works nicely with phones using netfront 3.1. It?s a great hack while we?re waiting for Operation Black Cell to produce a better option. Thanks Ikioi!

CyberArmy Clashes with Wikipedia Editor
Founded by Jimmy Wales on 15 January 2001, Wikipedia is a very useful resource. Spawned from the Nupedia project, Wikipedia is designed to be quickly editable by nearly any user. Its predecessor was believed to be too slow in getting content published. However, Nupedia had a 7 step process for verifying and authenticating material. Serious researchers rarely cite Wikipedia as a source due to its lack of authority for authenticating material edited by almost anyone. Nevertheless, the site is often used for quick information and further research thereafter.

Due to the easily editable content, ?edit wars? often take place. Various individuals disagree on accuracy and level of information that should be presented in any given article. And this is where CyberArmy clashed with Wikipedia. An individual felt CyberArmy?s article, although mentioned in various publications might be worthy of holding a place in Wikipedia, was basically ?self-glorification?. A review of the article by CA members found that the article originally submitted basically consisted of facts only. Although some information might have found to be subjective, the article described CyberArmy and it?s Brigades, Zebulun, structure and current leadership as well as various publications it had been featured in.

Two of our members, Ikioi and CyberTNT, took part in a professional discussion which resulted in the important information being restored with additional relevant information being added to the article. The manner in which our members handled the situation demonstrates the professionalism of CA?s members as well as the status of our community on the Internet.

Babycray is CA?s Youngest Member
Born 9 April at 10:50 am after a mad dash to the hospital at 3am to craytonic and Ladycray, Babycray is CA?s newest and youngest member, although she hasn?t yet quite mastered her typing skills. Ladycray returned home from the hospital with an email inbox full of congratulations. She in turned responded to everyone and shared pictures of her new bundle of joy. Congrats craytonic and Ladycray. We?re looking forward to seeing Babycray involved in some of our projects. ;)

FireFox tip
Thrawn (aka. Makat) offered the following tip for FireFox:
My bookmark for CA is set up so that I can type "ca forum" in the address bar and arrive at the forum, or "ca files" and arrive at the files repository.
It saves time and bookmark space, in my opinion.
To do the same, create a bookmark for CA with the URL "http://www.cyberarmy.net/%s", with the keyword "ca".
You'll now be able to use "ca forum" and other similar things. (Note the word following CA must be a valid directory.)

I'm sure please have figured this out already or have other systems, but I thought it was worth sharing just in case.

CyberArmy Updates its Challenge Discussion Policy
Senior ChalDev member Gen ToTaL shared CA?s updated Challenge Discussion Policy:
In the past there has always been a complete ban on all challenge discussion related to CyberArmy challenges. This has now changed.

The Alphaplex challenge was based on the hardest parts of the Zebulun challenge, and as such requires some advanced skills, in several areas. The idea behind this change in policy is to create an environment of teamwork, help to educate CyberArmy users, and as a secondary goal, encourage more users to attempt the Alphaplex challenge. It will also bring the challenge in line with our community ideals, as stated in our mission statement, to support "free creation, development and proliferation of ideas and knowledge" and "seek to educate people".

For this purpose we have created a new forum, the "Challenge Discussion Forum". You will now be allowed to discuss solutions (within reason) to the Alphaplex challenge in this forum, and only this forum. Posting complete solutions to parts of the challenge will not be allowed, however we encourage the discussion of the skills needed for parts of the challenge, and will allow discussion of ideas.

We (the ChalDev team) reserve the right to delete any posts from this forum.

In discussing possible solutions you should also be aware that there are built-in anti-cheat mechanisms. Your password will not be the same as everyone elses. If you share passwords (and attempt to use them) you may be automatically banned from the challenge. You are being given the opportunity to ask for hints, and discuss ideas, but if this is abused we will go back to a complete ban on challenge discussion and the forum will be removed.

Any discussion in other forums, on IRC, via CMS, or any other means may result in you being banned from the challenges.

Good Luck, and if you have any questions please contact Gen. Total or Mar. Tacheon.

Recent Site Changes
Many thanks to Sorcer who contributed the updated navigation icons as well as the rank icons. The old icons were replaced in lieu of the something a little crisper. Fu also cleaned up the CA logo which was implemented.

In addition, Goldfish added the following features:
- Recursive Logs - There's now a link to view all the logs of all the brigades beneath you in the CoC, this is a feature which has been quite a popular request of late.
- Invite List - Invite list for all brigade join modes. For those of you who were around in the time of the original brigade system, this is basically the same. If the brigade is set to custom invites, only people/groups on the invite list can join up, and will automatically be accepted into the brigade. If it's on restricted joins, members on the invite list will skip the queue process and become full members instantly. If its open, its open, and its pointless filling out the list. The invite list works the same as on the forums access lists (which we've had a bit of a problem with lately) so i'll explain it now: invite: a,b;c;d,e,f = User must be in groups a AND b, OR c, OR d AND e AND F. t groups are the chain from t$num downwards, b groups are the immediate brigade, and x groups are the x/o?s of the brigade. Nicknames should be prefaced by ~. So if I want only dinah coders and eliza to join my group, i put: chaldev;~eliza Simple eh? :)
- IntraBrigade Moves ? Allows Brigade C/O?s to move people around their subgroups.

comet added a Personal User Bar which includes Logged In As and links for messages, user?s ToDo list, Profile and Logout to the top of the Forums Main page. He also added to the Brigade Command Panel for C/O?s and X/O?s the ability to see if a member is ?set away?.

Numerous other updates were added by Chawmp and wa1800z which can be reviewed via the history of https://svn.cyberarmy.net/dinah/browse/trunk/.

zZine Fortnightly Issues #13 and #14 were Released
Issue #13 was a CyberArmy edition featuring CyberArmy Privacy Commission. CPC?s history, projects, and an interview with Ker Doeycall were features. The newly added BCoord?s Corner was also included which allows BCoord?s the ability to share our thoughts on a myriad of issues with you. Administrative issues resulted in Issue #14 being released late. These issues should be resolved and future issues should be released on time. Nevertheless, Issue #14 focused on *nix operating systems. The Linux Kernel, RedHat, Ubuntu, LFS, Gentoo and FreeBSD are just a few of the featured articles.

CPC releases CyberArmy Petitions
CPC revived and released CyberArmy Petitions through a professional site update. Particular attention has been paid to the security and integrity of the petitions site. The first petition is currently being discussed and reviewed for presentation titled Identity Theft. CyberArmy Petitions offer a new tool in which CA members can assist in accomplishing CA?s goals. Everyone is asked to look over the site and to begin submitting ideas for petitions.

Radical Shift for CyberArmy
Well known former Mar Ikioi brought some suggestions to the Ideas Forum. While not all of Ikioi?s suggestions were met with enthusiasm, the underlying idea behind his post was taken very seriously. In summary, CA is failing to bring in and then retain large numbers of recruits and needs to find ways to stimulate and engage new members. Most people agree that challenges are a great way to bring in new folks. However, the challenges don?t keep people in CA long term. Various methods of working in projects were discussed and an old discussion on the CADev forum was revisited. Some steps are being taken and discussion on different ways to keep new users engaged is taking place. We?d like to generate open discussions on various ideas and opinions on the Ideas Forum so encourage everyone to put forward ideas and suggestions on the Ideas Form or through Feedback.

This concludes the digest for the Members, Public and Ideas Forums. See you next month!
