Summary
Cyberarmy University Testing Center Online
Body
The CAU Testing Center (TC) went live on the 1st of June, 2005. Initially, it started out with 19 tests, and they are now up to 24. The TC has become very popular with both CA members and the general Internet public, and as a result, the total number of members of the CAU site has surpassed 800. The honor for this incredible achievement goes to Lieutenant Icydemon, C/O of the Testing Center Brigade, and Lieutenant MaDvLaD. Great work guys! :-)

Stop Software Patents in the EU

CinC Advisor Chawmp placed a bulletin on the public forum regarding Software Patents in the EU. A yellow splash screen was also put up on the CyberArmy site with the following message:

"The Software Patents Directive, as approved by the European Council of Ministers, would legalise US-style Software Patents in the European Union. If that happens, software developers will no longer own what they write and can [also] be sued for selling or distributing their own software. This would not only endanger your job, but the entire European software sector."

CyberArmy Memorials Re-Released

The CyberArmy Memorials website, which is dedicated to all the departed and retired members of CyberArmy, has been re-released and can be found here. Credit goes to Icklenewt, Fingerlessknight, Catfancy, Disturbia, and Leetah for their effort in bringing the site back online.

First and Second Issues of CPC Privacy Watch Released

The CyberArmy Privacy Commission has released "Privacy Watch", a publication providing articles on privacy related matters. The Chief Editor for Privacy Watch, Captain Gisterose, X/O of the CyberArmy Privacy Commission, has also received the CyberArmy Member of the Month award for her outstanding achievements.

Details about the releases, as given by Captain Gisterose, are as follows:

"Privacy Watch Releases is a publication presenting articles on privacy related topics for both CPC and CyberArmy members. It aims to educate our members on what is going on in the Internet community, any threats that may be occuring, and prevention methods to reduce the risk of threats.

The first issue is about unsolicited bulk email, and will give its readers a thorough understanding of what spam is, what it does, and mainly, how to prevent it. We have an introduction as to what spam is, and methods to avoid spam, including some well-known examples such as Project Honeypot, which is then followed through by reviews on two mail servers and their own methods of preventing spam being distributed to their customers.

All areas of CPC have been working on this project, from the Privacy Publications team who helped with writing the articles, to the Privacy Development team who helped with the site coding and layout. This is something they should be proud of, as they have worked really hard trying to get tasks done within a strict deadline.

The second edition that CPC Privacy Watch Releases will present will be on spyware; explaining what it is, what it does, how dangerous it can be to an infected computer, removal methods, and prevention methods."

OSI Reverse Engineering Challenge

The Open Source Institute turned out some Reverse Engineering Challenges to sharpen the skills of CyberArmy members. The challenge was open till the end of June 2005, and prizes were sponsored by Apress. Credit goes to sefo, who put in the time to create the GEEK Reverser levels.

People who passed level 6 by the end of June 2005 were entered into the prize drawing. Details of everyone who passed are available here

The two prize winners were Bilbo and SIOE.

CovaNet

CyberArmy Special Operations is starting development of a project called CovaNet. Lieutenant Kernel Zaydana describes this project:

"SpecOps is coordinating a new project called CovaNet, and we are inviting the rest of CyberArmy to help with ideas, design, coding, and any other resources. Something to note here is that this will be done on a "project basis", so you don't need to be a SpecOps member to help out. You can just stay in your own brigade, and help with this aside from your normal work. OK, so what is Covanet? In one sentence, CovaNet is a distributed synaptic network with the aim of providing a secure and robust layer on top of IP for all manner of communications through the transparent use of encryption, decentralization, and a new addressing/naming scheme."
