Feedback Digest - October 2005| Category | | | Summary | | | Body | Features
- cMS Page Jump: Currently, if you want to get to page 26 of your cMSes, you have to click "next page" repeatedly. A user noted that the ability to go to a specific page would be useful. This is true, but the cMS folder area is getting quite cluttered so we may not see this feature implemented soon simply due to design issues. However, in the meantime, you can put the page number you want to go to directly into the URL (e.g. click page 2 and then change the number in the URL to the page you want to jump to).
- Brigade Queue Removal: If you join a brigade queue, it would be useful if you could remove yourself. Well, if you are in one brigade queue and choose to join another, you can click the apply button, and a confirmation will appear to make sure you want to leave the other queue to join this one. You can then move to the second queue. Alternatively, if you just choose to no longer join that brigade, but don't wish to move elsewhere, just contact the C/O to let them know, and they can remove you.
- cMS Delivery Notification: Wouldn't it be great to know if your cMS was read, or if the user has gone AWOL? Well, the issue isn't quite as simple as that. If you know your cMS has been read, you may expect a quick response, but this may not be in the best interests of the recipient. Furthermore, we feel this may constitute a privacy issue. There are already mechanisms in place to know when a member last logged in (this is indicated in their public plan, http://www.cyberarmy.net/~USER) which can help identify those who are are away/inactive.
- CA Files: A user indicated that it would be nice to be able to customise the order of files by the various fields. This has now been implemented. CA Files can now be listed by name, date, or size, and in either ascending or descending order, using the small arrows beside each field. Please note the order of directories will not be affected, and similarly the latest submissions folder will always list by date.
- cMS not delivered confirmation: It was proposed that it would be useful to inform the user of failure to send cMSes due to invalid usernames. You do in fact get a message informing you which users the cMS could not be delivered to, and any others will have received the cMS. In your sent box - only the members that successfully received the cMS will show in the 'To:' field. If you have messages that have a blank 'To:' field, this indicates none of the recipients successfully received the message.
- Better Error Messages: It was noted that failure messages when updating part of your profile were not very clear, and easily misread to be successful. These have now been improved and the 'not' successful is displayed in red. Additionally, the success messages for updating sections of the profile have been improved.
- Skillset Interface Tweak: Members believed that in order to edit one's existing skill level in your skillset, you needed to delete and re-add it. In reality, the skills were all still present in the 'add' section and you just re-added the skill with the new level. However it was felt the interface needed to be clearer and more user friendly. As such, your existing skills now have an update selection menu beside each, and only those not yet on your skillset are listed in the 'add' selection menu.
- Notification of replied cMS: Many email clients indicate when you have replied to a message and we received the suggestion to do this with cMSes as well. In the recent update of the message area, this was implemented. You will now see an icon to the left of messages that have been replied to, forwarded or both.
- Creating Folders in cMS: We have had this request in the past but up until now it was yet to be implemented. The recent update to the message area primarily included the feature to customise your folders. All members will have the 'sent' and 'inbox' folders, and the 'unread' filter, but you can now add to these by using the selection menu visible when viewing a folder and selecting 'edit folders'. In this section, you can create new folders, rename existing ones, and delete empty folders. New folders cannot be named 'sent', 'inbox' or 'unread', and you may only delete folders which are empty. This new system allows you to mix sent and received messages in the same folder if you really want to, so to ensure these are distinctly differentiable, sent messages are now shown in italics.
- ToDo List BBCode: It was suggested that allowing BBCode in ToDos would enable users to emphasise specific areas, colour coordinate different projects, have active links, and generally make the list more useful. This is agreed and will be implemented soon. Additionally, the links to messages and the ToDo list in the userbar on /forum/ will be made to always link, regardless of whether you have new messages / ToDos.
Other/Miscellaneous
- CAIRC Servers: A user requested the list of CAIRC servers to be publically available. That information is located at /wiki/irc.
- Software Enquiries: We recently had a feedback request asking for where a specific program could be located. The Feedback system is not designed to provide information on such areas, and should be used only for CyberArmy related matters. Please use the specialist forums for help on general computer issues.
- Wiki Updates: There have been a few changes in CA over the past month, and some of you noticed that the /about/ wiki did not reflect them. Hopefully, the necessary sections have now been updated, but please remember that those with rank LtKer+ can update the wiki yourselves.
Report A Bug
- Problems with 'magic quotation'?: Occasionally there is an issue on posts where, for example, a quotation shows up as &qu. This is due to HTML encoding issues which we will have difficulty correcting in the scripts and the database. This bug has been reported infrequently in the past and has been determined to be low priority. We are currently discussing the idea of posting something about it in CyberArmy's FAQ section.
- /contact/ Bug: There was a bug in the feedback script that would produce a 500 code (Internal Server Error) when the subject topic was not selected. This has now been fixed to produce a 412 code (Precondition Failed).
- /forum page userbar bug in Konqueror: A while ago, we were informed that the userbar on /forum/ was incorrectly aligned when viewed using the Konqueror browser. This has now been fixed.
- Password Reset: When resetting your password, there were instances where it was possible that you could receive more than one password (such as when using two machines or browsers). In reviewing this issue, it was discovered that upon receiving a confirmation code - you could use this multiple times to be emailed new passwords. This has now been fixed, and in turn we believe this will fix the password issue.
- https Issues: Users were finding that when browsing the site securely using IE, warnings to display insecure items would appear on every page. This has now been fixed.
Follow Ups
- Publish Skills!: In the July Feedback Digest we had a request to publish skills, which we agreed upon doing. This has now been implemented - if a user has set one or more skills, you can view the list in their public plan (http://www.cyberarmy.net/~<username>).
Input Requests
- Session Timeouts: When a session times out, some members are no longer presented with the "do you want to login again?" page. However, for others this is still working fine. If you have any observations to offer on this issue, please send them to Feedback, with details. Thank you in advance for any help on this issue.
Thank you for all your feedback - every submission is considered and discussed. Please expect to wait up to several weeks to receive details regarding the outcome of your feedback. If you have yet to hear back regarding a request or report you made, please don't hesitate to cMS me (icklenewt) and I'll chase it up and reply to you with its status.
Remember, if you wish to be contacted in response to your feedback, or are requesting assistance, ensure contact details are enclosed. |
