Feedback Digest March 2005

Category
CyberArmy
Summary
I'd like to point out to everyone that all feedback is appreciated. Sometimes ideas are discussed and debated, resulting in long periods before we are able to adequately respond to individuals who've submitted feedback, and then publish that information

I think the logout link should appear on every page, even forums etc. It would save some bandwidth on the server if people could simply logout no matter what page they were on rather than having to go to MyCA page before they logout.

Decision:
This feature is being worked on, but as with the cMS notification on "every" page, will come later down the road.
/ed.(comet) - note - on the forum front page this should be available by the time this edition of zZine gets released/

Message Notification:
Why dont we have a forum for personal/contrary views, Because im getting sick to death of all these posts on other forums where someone states there view and people reply with flames.

Decision:
Aside from having adequate forums, we just need to stop flaming the opinions of others and have constructive conversation instead. Personal/contrary views and debates are intended to be expressed on the Current Events and CA Ideals forums. Another forum is necessary. One consideration is that threads on the Members forum (and possibly others) that turn into flames/debates be moved to either the Current Events or CA Ideals forum as applicable. However, deciding when that should be done can be tricky. If an instance occurs, moderation can be contacted directly or via Feedback for consideration.

Message Notification:

Just wondered if the [Wiki edit] can be modified by any member and why [some words, specifically members names] have a link (marked by a little '?') to this edit field (like SunDevil in the retired staff).

Response
Any member LtKer+ (this should be fun ;P). Any and all changes are logged and tracked. Wikis by default will treat any ProperCaseStringAllRunTogether as a different page in the wiki. The little '?' means that it can't find a page called "ProperCaseStringAllRunTogether." The way to get around this is to change WordsLikeThis to Words`Like`This so it knows that it shouldn't be looking for a page called WordsLikeThis.
NOTE:
Several members submitted feedback suggesting changes and corrections throughout the site. Thanks to everyone for helping make a better CyberArmy.

Message Notification:

I forgot my old password and my registered email has changed.

Response
To begin with, this user didn't leave any contact information. Since many folks will initially overlook the about/ Wiki, we decided to use the newly implemented forum sticky to stick two messages at the top of the forum. The first message addresses issues for new members attempting to register. The second message addresses issues for forgotten passwords.

Message Notification:
On most online forums when you are viewing a thread you have a quick link back to the main forum list or the area you are in (in ca case this may be public, brigate forum and so on). At the mo when you goto a post you just see the topic for this post is it possible to have this added as the only way i can see of going back out to the main list is:
1 using the back arrow or
2 clicking on forums then going back into the 1 you was looking at.

Response
There's a link for that under the subject of the message (top center of page) and directly above the Prev and Next buttons.

Feature Requests:

Message Notification:

I dont often have msg and when I do I see them when I login but was curious if we could add a feature to see if you have unread cms you get a notification say next to the area where it saids your logged in.

Like Logged in as my_user_name (1) New msg. so users that are viewing other areas of the site can simply see if someone is trying to contact them.

Decision:
This feature is already in development and will be included in future releases of Dinah

FOLLOW UP
This feature has been partially implemented. In addition to the familiar MyCA UserBox, new messages can be noted on the main forums page. If this feature is going to be extended to display on other pages, it will be implemented farther down the road.

Sig Generator Script

I just read catfancy's post on one of the forums on project ideas for visual design...here's a good one...

A Dinah coder'll have to look this over, but I think it's a great idea - CF said something about making some generic signature images - well I'd like to propose using those blank images in a signature generating script for CA members.

I dont know much about mod_perl (actually I know nothing) but I thought we could put a little sig generator script on the site somewhere. It would use your rank image (so Troopers couldn't use a CinC image, etc), and then have a few fields you could use to add text to the image. Default fields could include Your name, then your main position, then a sub-position or something.

Decision:
None yet.

FOLLOW UP
Decision:
We don't really care if Troopers use a CinC image in their sigs. It's very obvious who an individual is and what their rank is when they post. So why bother adding restrictions. Our general forum guidelines dictate what is NOT appropriate. I don't see a lot of benefit, other than something folks can play with, and it appears to me they already play quite a bit with the Sig. The obvious disadvantage is the potential additional load to the server.

Away List

There should be a member "away" list somewhere on the site. Since the date and time of the moment the away was set is recorded in a database already, it'd be a cinch to print out to a list. You could link to it on the member's forum MOTD or in the wiki somewhere or something. This'd also clear up the "I forgot to set that I was back" problems with members too lol.

Oh, and it might be a good idea to put "You are marked as Away" in the /my sidebar up by where the link to our message box is too - that may halp people remember to set back when they come back. lol

Decision:
It was decided that a public list isn?t necessary, but that it would be a handy tool for C/Os and Brigade Commanders. No further decision has been made.

FOLLOW UP
Decision:
There is no useful purpose for a public "away" list. However, adding an individual's away status to their "command panel" is a good idea and has been added to the ToDo list.

We hope you enjoyed this edition of the Feedback Digest! One quick reminder: if you encounter any bugs/errors on CyberArmy.net or the brigade sites, please submit a report to Feedback!
