What is knoppix?
Knoppix is what is known as a live-cd distro - this is a linux distro that fits onto and boots from a cd. It is based on the debian/gnu linux distribution, supports many devices (gfx,usb,sound,etc...), and can be used for many purposes, holding up to 2GB of software on the one CD.
Knoppix Versions...
Knoppix is currently in version 3.8.1. This distribution is aimed at all user levels, and can provide a very good introduction to the linux operating system. Currently included in this distribution are the following:
# Linux-Kernel 2.4.x and 2.6.x
# KDE as the standard desktop with K Office and the Konqueror WWW-browser konqueror
# X Multimedia System (xmms) an MPEG-video, MP3, Ogg Vorbis Audio player and xine
# Internet connection software kppp,pppoeconf (DSL) and isdn-config
# Gnu Image Manipulation Program (GIMP)
# utilities for data recovery and system repairs, even for other operating systems
# network and security analysis tools for network administrators
# OpenOffice(TM), the GPL-developed version of the well-known StarOffice(TM) office suite
# many programming languages, development tools (including kdevelop) and libraries for developers
# in total more than 900 installed software packages with over 2000 executable user programs, utilities, and games

There is also a "security Tools Distrubution" called Knoppix STD.
This distro has a very limited GUI but includes a lot more tools for forensics, data recovery, and network based work. It is aimed at both novices and proffessionals, however a general understanding of Linux is assumed, and needed. Knoppix STD is currently in version 0.1 and contains open-source software in the following categories:

KNOPPIX can be used for many things, including the following:

Some of the main advantages of knoppix, and any live-cd distro is:
