Promotions Digest - April 2005

Summary
Promotions are a valued tool to the CA community. They have existed since the early days of CA and have grown to hold more meaning and value over the years. The act of promoting someone is three fold:
Body
First and foremost, rank demonstrates trust in the community. A break from the former method of promoting via challenges which demonstrated ones ability to research and apply skills learned. As members join and then assist the community their level of trust rises. We expect those members with higher ranks to be valued, trusted members of the community whom we can rely upon to assist other members and the community as a whole.

Second, promotions demonstrate dedication to the community and its goals. Joining CA, one of its Brigades and/or projects gives members the ability to work toward our common goals. We're able to work on things of interest, learn new things and meet a wide range of people. Answering questions of the specialty forums gives us the chance to share our knowledge and increase the value of the community.

A third factor in promotions, which is often overlooked, is potential. Based in part on the two previous factors, trust and dedication shows a members potential to perform at a higher rank, which we expect to demonstrate greater weight in the community. Members who are generally trusted and perform only periodically don't necessarily demonstrate the potential to perform at a higher rank. While our membership is based on volunteers who give time and effort as they can, those who are more active, leading and sharing, show more potential to benefit the community at a higher rank.

As such, promotions in the community are taken very seriously. Brigade Commanders evaluate and access these three factors for our younger members and can promote up to the rank of Captain. The ranks of Maj, LtKer and Ker are considered "career" ranks. These promotions are reserved for members who have been active in the community for some time and demonstrate the potential to take much greater roles in leading the community. Requests for members submitted for promotion to these ranks are handled by the Promotion Council. The Council is comprised of 10 active members (2 from each Brigade) and a reserve from each Brigade who votes in the absence of one of the active members. The integrity of this Council is paramount to our Promotion System. Trusted members are selected by Brigade Commanders to sit on the council which is overseen by the Brigade Coordinators. The votes and any discussion concerning a promotion based on research is conducted on a forum specifically for this purpose. The council members take their jobs seriously. They value our membership and insist on making sure promotions are "earned" and not rewarded. As a result, our community is able to develop and promote deserving members into greater leadership positions who serve to further develop future leaders.

That said, we are proud to bring forward our recent promotions for the month of April 2005.

LtKer anvar
As the XO of CASOS, anvar has demonstrated great leadership skills conducting audits and overseeing the release of recent tutorials by SOS. He has ensured the quality and timeliness of monthly Brigade reports when the C/O was unavailable and edits them when the C/O prepares them. A highly motivated officer focused on the mission as well as the morale of his Brigade. A long overdue promotion.

CPT CyberTNT
A dedicated CASOS officer who focuses his efforts on Long-term Projects and Research. He also extends his experience to the SNEAK and ChalDev teams and can frequently be found assisting users on the Programming Forum. A well rounded officer and great asset to CA.

She has assisted with admin material as well as assisted with a recent article, co-authored by FiberOptix. She's already proven to be a great asset to CA and we can't wait to see new material from her efforts.
