Welcome to the May edition of Staff Digest...

CAU Knowledge Bank Needs Help

Adtrace writes:
"We're not completely void of articles, but we are finding it nearly impossible to generate the necessary content to keep retaining visitors each month. CAU is growing in accounts/visitors/hits, but we aren't really growing in content. I'd like to formally request the help of staff and Kernels in trying to supplement our article generation. Even if you wrote 1-2 a year, and a few people joined you, that would really make a difference. Even if largely on the EOY article listing.

What's in it for you? Well, I keep throwing around CAU stats and apologies if this is getting annoying. I'm not trying to flaunt CAU (and we do keep in mind we have a very bigger brother in OSI), just trying to point out that the opportunity and readers are genuinely there. It's great for reputation/respect building in the general CA community. Our "most read" article has 2811 reads, followed by 2100 and then 2083. People are reading and visiting the Knowledge-Bank so please help out."

CyberArmy copyright

After the recent issues with CA clone sites, the idea of registering or copyrighting the 'CyberArmy' name was raised. There are parts of the dinah license that prevent clone sites from using the CyberArmy name (4. Neither the name of the CyberArmy nor the names of its contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without specific prior written permission.) however the administrators of the clone sites don't seem to be able to follow them (either through ignorance, defiance, or lack of skill to make the changes). Registering the 'CyberArmy' name would allow us to take further legal action against the administrators of these sites. If CA decided to register the CyberArmy name it was suggested that we should involve ISPan. Issues of tying the name or dinah Intellectual Property to individuals was also discussed. The main two concerns with the idea are cost and enforcement. The issue is still being discussed.

CA promotions Guidelines

It has been suggested that the guidelines on /about relating to promotions are very unrealistic and quite misleading. This is mostly due to the time limits set for each promotion. As a result, the Brigade Coordinators will be reviewing the guidelines for promotions up to the rank of Kernel. Several brigades already have their own guidelines, and the C/Os of those brigades have their own ideas on when a person is ready for a promotion. For this reason, each brigade C/O will be contacted and brigade guidelines read before a decision is made on the new guidelines. While the final decision will always remain with the brigade C/O, Brigade Coordinators, and Promotion Council, it is useful to have some standard guidelines to work with to ensure a CA-wide standard for ranks achieved from different brigades.

Projects Preview

For the last month or so, Staff have had access to a development version of the new Projects system, soon to be introduced to CA. Members were added to the structure so that Staff could see how the system would work, and test the functions available for project management. Several concerns were raised relating to the admin and the functions available to members. There were also requests for extra functionality in certain areas. These requests and concerns will be dealt with before the Projects system goes live.

CA.biz Clone Site

As most people already know, a new CA clone site was discovered, using dinah for its backend, which is clearly in violation of the dinah license. The people responsible for the site were contacted by CA Staff representatives and asked to take the site down while changes were made such that the site would conform to the license agreement. Since then the site has been up and down, with various attempts made to change the site to meet the license requirements. At the time of writing, the site is back up, with a new logo and a different colour background, but still using the CyberArmy name and attempting to replicate the CyberArmy Brigades (Academy, Morale, Moderation, SAS, and CIA) and also with no attempt to actually adhere to the license (no clearly visible link to cyberarmy.net and still using the cyberarmy name). This is an ongoing issue and will continue to be discussed.

Staff availability over the summer

As the summer months are approaching and school finishes for another year (for a large amount of CA members), the topic of who is available over the summer was discussed. As usual, there will be a few people on LOA at any given time. However there will still be pleanty of active Staff members around to allow continued progress over the summer.

Congratulations to New Promotions in May

2Lt. Fastnet, 2Lt. Lessthanzero, 2Lt. Mirmo, Lt. Icydemon, Cpt. Catfancy. Congratulations on your promotions and the recognition of the hard work you have done for Cyberarmy and its brigades.
