SuSE Linux| Category | | | Summary | | The SuSE distribution was "officially" released in 1994. Originally in mid to late 1992 SuSE was actually not a distribution in itself but rather a combination of SLS or "Softlanding Linux Systems" works and the earlier slackware distr |
| | Body | SLS was the first fully-featured linux package to utilize protocols such as the X Windows System (X11), the standard toolkit to build graphic user interfaces on UNIX and UNIX-Like Operating systems (and also just as a not OpenVMS) and also TCP/IP!
The name S.u.S.E. came about from a UNIX consulting group that was created in late 1992. They performed usual OS group style activities, including newgroup postings but also released OS packages containing the SLS / Slackware package and linux manuals. In March of 1994 the S.u.S.E. usergroup released their first CD version of the SLS/Slackware package bundle and named it "S.u.S.E. Linux 1.0". Further down the track, S.u.S.E. integrated the "Jurix" distribution into it's package in 1996, this move stood to make the first really unique version of S.u.S.E. Linux being 4.2. During the late 90's SuSE Linux was one of the best linux distributions available, and as with most all Linux distributions those days was available for free. At this time, they also changed the distribution name from S.u.S.E. to just plain "SuSE". Originally standing for Software- und System-Entwicklung (German for, Software and system development), SuSE no longer has any official meaning and is no longer seen as an abbreviation.
During 2003, SuSE was unexpectantly acquired by the NOVELL Corporation which sort to take on further development of the operating system. Through a ton of revisions you can still see a lot of the SuSE legacy evident in today's versions of this fine linux distribution. The only real thing these days that has changed is that SuSE has went down the commericial road and has slapped a hefty price tag on it, examples such as Red Hat spring to mind. SUSE Linux's free personal operating systems came to a halt at version 9.1, now upto 9.3 SuSE Linux now sports a "professional" version and a "live cd" version. Nowadays SuSE is shipped with a cutting edge update and console management and administration program called "YaST2", includes KDE and GNOME desktops and includes K3B, amaroK, black box, Xine, Open Office and much much more.
In summary SuSE is a unique and smooth linux distribution which is definitely a distribution in it's own right and has defiantly "made it's own" away from being a slackware based operating system. It has an extensive array of multimedia applications included in the package and is able to undertake the operations of a general computer geek with ease.
