Hmm, have you ever screwed your Windows machine so hard that it can't even boot properly (implies: missing crucial system parts like ntoskrnl)?

Instead of reformatting or reinstalling the Operating System from scratch, there is something that can save your day (a fresh installation would be far more faster but the installation of applications and the setting up could use quite some of your time).

Make sure that your computer is booting from a CD, insert the Windows Installation Disk in your CDROM and boot from there. Then use the repair console.

The console is a minimal console with not so many options but powerful enough and it covers:
  • Corruption of the Master Boot Record (MBR)
  • Corrpution of the Boot Sector
  • Corruption of the boot.ini (the file used to tell you how many Windows operating systems you've got and which one to boot from)
  • Allows you to copy missing files
  • some more I cant exactly remember
Now, the most frequent event is to have one file missing. You have probably seen the message saying: "Can't find kernel32.dll" (not exactly but you get the idea). Using the repair console you can get the missing file from the Installation Disk and put it in the System32 directory. Then reboot and the system works! :)

I'm not analysing the process since it would need many pages (but I will some time, I promise), since it's just a tip which can save you tons of time of reinstalling and reconfiguring.

Even if you are a newbie, try it and see if you can do it. Your system is already severely damage it, in the worst case you'll just have to reinstall it.
