Differences between languages?

Tr Gorydeath

Can anybody give me some kind of brief overview about some of the most popular languages? I'm really new to programming and am interested in learning as many languages as possible, so any recommendations of which are worth learning and for what?

Specifically, I'd like to know what Perl, C, and Java are most effective for respectively, and some pros and cons. Feel free to give as little or as much information as you know about this... anything is appreciated.

P.S. I know that most languages can do many things, but I'm also aware that some are better at certain things, as well as are easier to learn. I'm basically looking for a starting point. I've read into C and a little bit of Java so far, and I might look into Perl
